Living in Kamloops: the honest version

Seasons and climate

Kamloops is semi-arid (Köppen BSk). Expect about 278 mm of precipitation and 64 cm of snow a year, around 2,080 hours of sunshine, and an average of 36 days above 30 °C. Winters are the third-mildest of any non-coastal Canadian city. The record high is 47.3 °C, set on 29 June 2021, and the record low is −38.3 °C, from January 1950 (Wikipedia climate data).

Elevation changes the weather more than people expect. Brocklehurst, on the valley floor, can be up to about 4 °C warmer than Aberdeen up the hill. Hillside neighbourhoods get more snow and slicker winter roads.

Summer 2026 realities

• Water: the City declared Drought Level 4 restrictions from 20 July 2026, which meant watering lawns once a week, and water use dropped 16%. Water rates will rise about 10% for 2027 (roughly $16 for an average household) and move toward consumption-based charges (City, CFJC).
• Smoke: an orange-level air quality advisory was issued on 24 July 2026, and the dragon boat festival was cancelled over air quality. In August the province declared a state of emergency over wildfires elsewhere in BC.
• Heat: in June 2026 council asked staff to look at requiring air conditioning in rentals. The 2024 BC Building Code already sets a 26 °C indoor limit for new buildings.

What this means for buyers: air conditioning, xeriscaping, a HEPA-ready HVAC system and FireSmart landscaping are value-adders here, not luxuries.

Schools (SD73 Kamloops-Thompson)

School District 73 has 16,638 students in 35 elementary schools, 11 secondaries and one K–12 school (SD73). The city's secondaries are Brocklehurst, NorKam (with the IB programme), Sa-Hali, South Kamloops, Valleyview, Westsyde and the Kamloops School of the Arts.

Catchments change. Always check an address with SD73's find-my-catchment-school tool rather than relying on a listing. New homes also pay a school site acquisition charge, which builders pass on.

Thompson Rivers University

TRU began as Cariboo College in 1970, became University College of the Cariboo in 1989 and a university in 2005. The Sahali campus covers 250 acres, and TRU had 14,255 FTE students in 2024–25, plus the largest distance-education program in BC through Open Learning. Its law school, opened in 2011, was the first new one in Canada in more than 30 years (Wikipedia).

International enrolment fell by almost half after federal caps, to 2,766 students in spring 2026, and TRU ran a deficit with position cuts (CFJC). That matters for anyone buying a rental near campus. See the TRU rental estimator.

Healthcare

Royal Inland Hospital is Interior Health's tertiary referral centre for the Thompson-Cariboo-Shuswap, a catchment of about 225,000 km². It has roughly 250 beds, saw 67,012 emergency visits in 2022, and is the city's largest employer (Wikipedia). What's coming:

• The $386 million Kamloops Cancer Centre at RIH is five storeys, with three linear accelerators, an MRI suite and a 470-stall parkade. It was reported "on time and on budget" in June 2026 (CFJC).
• Coronary care (four beds within the ICU) returns to RIH in early 2027.
• Nine new hospitalists were recruited in June 2026, and the City and Interior Health announced a mobile outreach partnership in September 2026.

Recreation

Sun Peaks and Harper Mountain

Sun Peaks Resort is about 61 km and 58 minutes from City Hall by the routing estimate. It has 4,270 skiable acres, the second-largest in Canada, plus 882 m of vertical and about 5.6 m of snow a year. It started as Tod Mountain in 1961, and its Burfield chair is the longest fixed-grip chairlift in North America. Sun Peaks became its own municipality in 2010 and hosted the national downhill mountain bike championships in July 2026 (Wikipedia). Harper Mountain, the local hill, has 427 m of vertical and 15 runs, about 38 minutes out.

Golf

Kamloops is said to have 13 golf courses, the highest per-capita concentration in Canada. SCOREGolf's 2026 Top 100 ranked Tobiano, west of the city, at #23, Sagebrush near Merritt at #15 and Talking Rock in Chase at #84 (CFJC). Big Horn is at Sun Rivers.

Parks, trails and water

• Kenna Cartwright Park on Mt Dufferin is the largest municipal park in BC.
• Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area (1996), north of Batchelor and Westsyde, has bighorn sheep, sharp-tailed grouse and western rattlesnakes.
• Riverside Park has a beach, a water park, the Uji Friendship Garden and summer Music in the Park. The Rivers Trail runs about 40 km.
• The Kamloops Bike Ranch, at 26 ha, is described as Canada's largest municipal bike park, and Kamloops is often called the birthplace of freeride mountain biking.
• Paul Lake Provincial Park is about 30 minutes away.

Wine, events and hockey

Four award-winning wineries: Harper's Trail, Monte Creek Ranch, Privato and Sagewood. The calendar includes the Kamloops Buskers Festival, Rotary Ribfest, the Kamloopa Powwow (45 years in 2026) and the Highland Games, and the 55+ BC Games ran in September 2026. The WHL Blazers play at the Sandman Centre, and hometown player Logan Stankoven brought the Stanley Cup home in August 2026. The city hosts more than 100 tournaments a year, which is where the "Tournament Capital" name comes from.

Commute and drive times

Approximate off-peak times from City Hall (OpenStreetMap/OSRM). Real times run longer, especially on the Coquihalla in winter.

Getting around: Highways 1, 5, 5A and 97 meet here. VIA Rail's Canadian stops at Kamloops North, and the Rocky Mountaineer stops in town. YKA carried 72,937 passengers in Q2 2026, up 10.6%, and Air North plans a seasonal Kamloops–Vancouver–Whitehorse route from May 2027. Work and economy

The big employers include RIH, TRU, BCLC, the Domtar pulp mill, Tolko's plywood plant at Heffley Creek, and the New Afton and Highland Valley Copper mines. Kamloops unemployment reached double digits in late 2025, and a TRU economist linked part of that to the drop in international students (CFJC). Tkʼemlúps te Secwépemc has proposed a "7Mile Rail" inland rail staging hub.
